No surprise prize
The announcement of Toyo Ito as the recipient of this year’s Pritzker Prize came as little surprise to Boots.
In 2002, Ito was invited to design the Serpentine Pavilion by its selection panel, which is chaired annually by Peter Palumbo. The billionaire philanthropist also happens to chair the Pritzker selection committee. To date 13 architects have contributed to the Serpentine programme and all but two of them have bagged the Pritzker. Daniel Libeskind and Sn hetta surely have their hopes up for next year.
Nesting instinct
Boots has learned that Peter Rees is moving to a new abode, canadagooselangfordparka high above his kingdom. The City of London planning chief is understood to be taking up residence in The Heron, where a three-bed flat will set you back a cool$5.25 million. Rees is sure to take advantage of the private members’ club and, of course, the short walk to work.
Time for tea
Mark Brearley may still be planning his future following his departure from the newly merged Design for London, weddinggown but Boots hears that he has found an unlikely project for now.
He and his brother have saved a Bermondsey-based company from liquidation that specialises in making pressed aluminium trays and tea trolleys. They are clearly of a rather superior sort as the company counts Harrods among its stockists.
Nothing to take away
Oscar Niemeyer’s CIEP school system for Brazil was the subject of this week’s Venice Takeaway talk at the RIBA. A panel including Washington Fajardo from the Rio World Heritage Institute and Mairi Johnson from the Education Funding Agency debated its pros and cons.
But it seems the Venice Takeaway idea of exchanging thinking failed. Asked what advice he would give to the British for their schools, Fajardo declined to comment for fear of causing a “diplomatic problem”.
Well fortified
The Design Museum was packed for the launch of its Designs of the Year exhibition on Tuesday, with nominees David Kohn, Studio Egret West and Witherford Watson Mann among attendees.
Boots was particularly intrigued to see that the latter’s Astley Castle exhibit included a photograph of a lively birthday party held at the Landmark Trust property in honour of Oliver Wainwright, late of this parish.
None of the architects were expecting to take the big prize, however. By common consent, Heatherwick’s Olympic Cauldron has it in the bag.

The new documentary, Rihanna 777, which her Fenty Films produced, is said to go behind the scenes of the trip, fabricflowers according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Unapologetic debuted at Number One on the Billboard 200 albums chart, and her single hit the top of the Hot 100 chart the day after the tour finished.
The singer lived up the album name as she took to the stage 70 minutes late for her Diamonds world tour in Montreal on Sunday night.

She teamed the boots with a transparent T-shirt dress baring the legend 'sea of desire' and black underwear.
The outfit proved just one of six equally outrageous outfits.
They included a pop art inspired two-piece, in clinging red and yellow PVC, and studded black leather underwear, which she wore with another pair of over-the-knee boots.
