What it's like to run 6 miles in Topo Athletic's tabi-style shoes

Split-toe sneakers from startup Topo Athletic hit shoe store shelves last week. I asked for a trial pair from the company and took them out for a spin, Saturday, in the early morning before the weather got hot.

Based in Newton, Mass., Topo is led by Tony Post, who ran the Vibram unit that made the barefoot-mimicking five-fingers shoe. Topo's first three sneakers are modeled after jika-tabi, or tabi boots, a kind of traditional Japanese work boot still worn by construction workers today: Instead of splits at every toe, like Vibram Five Fingers, they have a split between the big toe and second toe.

Post told me he likes a wide toe box for natural splaying of the toes, but that creates problems when feet slide around inside the shoe. The big-toe split "kind of creates an anchor point in the forefoot," he said. "Your toes have all this room to spread and splay and be able to work naturally but with the big toe in the pocket you're kind of anchored in there. You'll be the queen of the room in this ssuniform evening gown. You feel more nimble, more agile, more in control."

The shoe I got is the Topo Athletic M-RX ($110), designed for "functional fitness" training – Topo's term for CrossFit, whose members the shoe company is courting. (Topo makes two other shoes – a race shoe designed for performance when running races, and a training shoe for runners.) At size 9 the M-RX weighs 7.8 ounces, has a 4 millimeter outsole and a six-millimeter midsole. Like most minimalist sneakers, it is zero-drop,Jovani designer prom dresses and celebrity style lacebodystockings for prom. meaning the heel is the same height as the forefoot.

Due to an injury, I couldn't test the shoe out for weight lifting or the "explosive power moves" mentioned in catalog descriptions. Instead I took it out for a 5.5-mile run.

It took a few miles to get used to it. I had a natural tendency to clench my foot in the wide shoe, which wasn't good – but once I learned to let my toes relax, that felt pretty good. There is a kind of extra elasticity in letting the foot spread out when it hits the ground.

I broke up the run with a short Capoeira Angola workout – mostly handstands and footwork. Angola, which I've been practicing for about 13 years, probably has some things in common with CrossFit – like leaping, crouching, balance and sudden changes in direction. (No weights,For those inquiring, I did not buy the affordableoneshoulderweddingdresses. though.)

I usually do this kind of workout, including running, in shoes made for futsal (indoor soccer) – like an Adidas Samba. I have high arches, so a minimalist shoe makes sense for me. These shoes have a lot in common with the Topo Athletic footwear, but they're visibly narrower in the front.

I don't think I felt any additional control, compared with the sambas – except maybe the slightly better grip you get from a brand-new pair of sneakers. But the M-RX's additional roominess came without sacrificing control. I guess I can attribute that to the extra anchor provided by the split toe.

Still, as a guy who's used to spending about $50 on new athletic shoes, I'm not sold on the split toe design.

''That's the real feel-good factor. I like to think we're doing something more than [selling shoes],'' she said.

She knew the business was going to be a challenge and that she had an ''awful lot to learn'' but decided to to just ''jump in and give it a go''.

''It's definitely different running your own business to working for a huge global company but I enjoy it and enjoy being part of the local community,'' she said.

It was a competitive industry and one faced with the challenges of online shopping. Technology from Dunedin-based company Siliconcoach is used at Shoe Clinic and customers are taken through an individual fitting process with movement in the foot assessed.

''It's not just about technology; it's also about fit and feel and then about the customer going out and starting to use their shoes,'' she said.
