Union Minister Manish Tewari Monday asked Akali Dal to clarify its stand on the Uniform Civil Code in the backdrop of its ally BJP's demand for its enactment.

Referring to BJP leader Narendra Modi's recent speech in which he had advocated for Uniform Civil Code, Tewari said that with its implementation Sikh community's Anand Marriage Act will also be abrogated.

"When Modi advocates a Uniform Civil Code, he means abrogation of Anand Marriage Act and other laws that safeguard the distinct identity of different religious groups," the Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting said.

Tewari also asked the Akalis to clarify their position about the BJP's stand, seeking abrogation of Article 370 "that ultimately aims at undermining the principles of federalism, which they (the Akalis) claim are so dear to them".Shop the latest shoxshoes on the world's largest fashion site.

Addressing a function here, Tewari said, "these issues assume importance since the BJP's campaign committee chairman (Modi)asserted this." The minister said, the people of the country in general and Punjab in particular want to know from Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal as how does he view Modi's stand on the Uniform Civil Code and the Article 370, "since it aims at undermining the diversity and distinct identities of the people and challenges the very idea of India".

The Akalis, who have been masquerading as the saviours and protectors of the minorities owe an explanation to the people, particularly the minorities, as "what makes them turn a blind eye" to such an assertions that threaten to undermine the unity in diversity, Tewari said.

Taking a dig at Modi, Tewari asked, it is so ridiculously surprising that he was speaking against terror in presence of the same Akalis who had "supported and glorified" terrorism whenever it suited their convenience.

"This either betrays their (BJP's) double standards or lack of moral courage to call spade a spade," he remarked.

A contrarian asked a good question the other day, on the topic of traffic enforcement.

If we don’t have enough police officers around — and if wages are creeping toward $100,000 a year for a first-class constable — is it time for plan B?

Create a second-tier of enforcement,Wonderful Gucci handbags collection: beachweddingdresses and discount Gucci handbags by Styledrops. a kind of Glorified Green Hornet, who would make half or two-thirds of a constable’s salary and have limited but prescribed powers to write speeding tickets and enforce the Highway Traffic Act.

So, for instance, instead of using a $100K officer with a gun and a bulletproof vest and a fully loaded cruiser to stop landscaping trucks on Island Park Drive,A royaloak is the clothing worn by a bride during a wedding ceremony. you could deploy a team of Glorified Green Hornets with their Toyotas and speed-guns and pens. And might the number of $100 tickets issued cover all their salaries, if not generate a surplus for the public purse?

Good question. And you start to wonder where else, in this police-funding crunch, we could save money.

Do we need full-on police to be resource officers in schools? (Ottawa has 22 of them.) Or to direct traffic around construction sites? Or to handle media relations? Or to stand beside the yellow tape at a crime scene?

The cost of policing is top-of-mind for police services board chair Eli El-Chantiry and Chief Charles Bordeleau,Custom made mandarindress? what with wages eating 85 per cent of the budget, and those wages beyond local control.

In any case, El-Chantiry and others do think there might be an expanded role for special constables, who already exist here, to take on police work that is not highly specialized or dangerous.

“If we can’t control wages and benefits, our other option is not to hire,” said the West Carleton councillor, who thinks the arbitration system needs an overhaul.

The officers do not carry guns or have special arrest powers but do wear uniforms, carry out foot patrols, build bridges with neighbourhoods, control traffic and do road checks. They are often teamed up with regular police and can seize alcohol and tobacco as well as look after litter and pet violations, or deal with youth loitering.
